Alia, Ortom in war of words over ₦100bn loan approval in Benue
On Sunday, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia traded barbs with his predecessor, Samuel Ortom, concerning the recent endorsement of a ₦100 billion loan by the State House of Assembly.
The Assembly granted the approval during an urgent session last Friday, responding to Alia’s proposal to secure the funds for various infrastructure initiatives throughout the state.
Alia explained that the borrowing would support efforts like upgrading and outfitting 23 general hospitals, improving and building science-focused schools across the state, and finishing current road, bridge, drainage, and power initiatives.

Additional uses encompass establishing skills training facilities, constructing and furnishing smart schools in every federal constituency, and developing and equipping the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Ihugh, among further endeavors.
The local branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), via its spokesperson Tim Nyor, criticized the Assembly’s decision on Friday, asserting that the Alia government has already benefited from considerable federal funding over the last two years.
In response, Alia, speaking through his press secretary Kula Tersoo, countered the PDP’s remarks, charging Ortom’s tenure with spreading hardship by neglecting salary and pension payments.
Alia labeled Ortom’s eight-year leadership as a major setback that saddled the state with massive debts and stalled growth.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP-led administration, especially that of Samuel Ortom, by their own admission, left behind a staggering direct debt burden of ₦187.7 billion, a weight that has constrained the state’s finances and development capacity.
“This administration later discovered that the figure was grossly understated and uncovered an additional ₦170 billion owed through local government areas. It is unbelievable that Ortom’s administration accumulated this humongous debt and still refused to pay civil servants and pensioners their entitlements.”
“Furthermore, it is shocking that the Ortom government, after receiving several financial interventions from the Federal Government — including bailout funds, LNG funds, and two tranches of the Paris Club debt refund — alongside unexplained direct borrowing, still handed over to Fr. Alia a debt profile of ₦187.7 billion, twelve months’ arrears of salaries for state civil servants, ten months’ arrears for local government staff, about thirty-six months’ pension arrears, and a landscape of collapsed infrastructure across the state, bringing the total debt to ₦359 billion”, the statement read.
Ortom quickly hit back through a release from his communications aide, Terver Akase, accusing Alia of dodging key issues raised by critics rather than facing them head-on.
Ortom pointed out that even with federal allocations to Benue surging by over 500 percent, Alia has not achieved significant advancements and prefers drawing comparisons to his forerunner.
He clarified that upon exiting office, several federal approvals were in the pipeline, such as the remaining portion of the ₦41 billion bailout and a ₦20 billion loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Ortom added that the state anticipated reimbursements worth billions for fuel subsidy removals and SURE-P allocations.
Moreover, he claimed Alia has not updated residents on the receipt or application of SURE-P funds.
The ex-governor faulted Alia for not clarifying a ₦68.3 billion deal to fix a 13-kilometer stretch from Wurukum Roundabout to the Air Force Base in Makurdi.
“To date, the Alia government has not provided any explanation in response to the concerns raised. The government has similarly kept sealed lips on probing questions regarding the ₦73 billion reportedly approved for a road project leading to the governor’s village in Mbadede, Vandeikya Local Government Area.
“Each time Governor Alia is confronted with questions bordering on transparency in governance or the welfare of Benue people, his reflex action is to attack Chief Ortom instead of providing facts and figures.
“This pattern of behaviour, now clearly habitual, smacks of an administration that is averse to probity and intent on evading the responsibility of explaining how public funds are being managed”, Ortom said.
Ortom also pressed Alia to reveal the spending details of the substantial inflows to the state since May 29, 2023.
“Why the secrecy surrounding the state’s finances? And why the desperate attempt to silence anyone who dares to ask these questions?
“Rather than address these legitimate concerns, Governor Alia has chosen the path of diversion, resorting to insults, half-truths, and false claims about Chief Ortom, whose stewardship as governor remains one of selfless service, transparency, good governance, and courage in defending the people of Benue State, particularly in the face of grave security challenges,” the statement added.
The echoes of the drums rolled out to celebrate the rescue of the 44 teachers and students, kidnapped from some schools in Oyo State, after 56 days in the bush, would surely be disrupted abruptly, with the divergent echoes of a fresh abduction, this time coming from Kogi State.
Reports indicate that the gunmen, struck on Tuesday at the Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of the state, abducting four students, the school principal and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member.
Authorities of the Kogi State Police Command, who immediately unleashed their operatives in hot pursuit of the abductors, said the attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. while the students were writing their NECO examination.
Saliu Oyiza Afusat, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and spokesman of the command, said a combined team of police personnel and other security agencies has launched a search-and-rescue operation following the incident.
Informing that one of the students was actually rescued immediately, she said efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers, adding that Naziru Bello Kankarofi, the state Commissioner of Police, alongside the Brigade Commander and the State Security Adviser to the Governor, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd), were already on the way to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

In response, the POTUS, posting on his Truth Social platform, wrote: “Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States.”
Trump, who said the investments would be “MASSIVE but, at the same time, extraordinarily good for them, and their future,” added that the deals would see factories, plants, and equipment pour into the US at “Historic levels.”
The Gulf nations have committed to invest trillions of dollars in the US, though it remains unclear how much of that they will actually spend over the next several years.
Meanwhile, the US continues to bomb Iran in what appears to be a resumption of active conflict between both countries, despite an ongoing roadmap to end the conflict.
Reports say operatives of the Osun State Police Command, and those of the Department of State Services (DSS) had tracking the trail of Adeniyi Adeyemi, controversial Director General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), for weeks, before he was eventually pulled out of his hole on Tuesday.
However, the duo, were said to have pulled back after failing to track him through his mobile phones, which he had reportedly switched off for about two days, making it difficult to locate him, leaving the stage for the members of the Police Intelligence Response Team (PI-RT) led by Moses Lohor, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
Lohor, said to have previously served as the Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of Osun State, and reported to have been involved in high-profile security operations and controversies, after taken over fielded his men to pick up signals from their well-oiled signal networks.
Regarded by many Osun residents as one of the key security officers who contributed significantly to the peace and stability enjoyed in Ilesa and other parts of the state during his tenure, he was said to have relied on his contacts before his transfer out of the state, said to have raised concerns from the public about the security situation he would be leaving behind.
His exit from the state was said to be hinged on an incident in 2024, in which he allegedly shot one Iyanda Alowonle, then Chairman of Osun State Motor Transport System, in the stomach at the police station in the state prompting an order for his arrest by then Inspector General of Police (IGP).
His effort was said to have paid off when he successfully tracked down the controversial PFIPC, boss, who was seen on Tuesday evening, in a shot video on social media undergoing interrogation, and eventually handed him over to Ibrahim Gotan, Commissioner of Police in the state.
The PUNCH quoted one of the sources as saying: “The arrest (of Adeyemi) took place on Tuesday morning by the IRT squad, who immediately moved him to Abuja. After he was arrested, he was taken to Ibadan and from there to Abuja.”
