George Nwaeke, Rivers State former Head of Service, got his own serving on Sunday from Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who accused him of finally selling out his conscience and family name for a mess of porridge.
It came on a day, Ehie, one of the arrowheads on the side of Fubara in the internecine political battle which has culminated to the imposition of State of Emergency in the state and his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, rebuffed the allegation that he led those that burnt the Rivers House of Assembly complex in October 2023.
Nwaeke, had told the world in a recorded video on Friday that he was privy to a meeting where Fubara, directly instructed Ehie, who eventually emerged a factional Speaker of the House at a point before reverting to his position of CoS to burn down the edifice.
But appearing on Sunday Politics, a public affairs programme on Channels Television, Ehie, not only refuted allegation but indicated that he was heading to court to press for the former HoS to press defamatory charges against the former HoS, or get him prove the allegation.
Hear him: “It is very important to clarify that I was not, I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Like everyone else, I woke up in the early house of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“I will not join issues completely with Mr George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against George Nwaeke and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations.”
Ehie, told his host that rather than accuse him, Martins Amaewhule, Speaker and leader of the 27-member assembly against the governor should be questioned about the fire in the said complex, as the inferno actually started shortly after security officials allowed his convoy into the complex.
Maintaining that it was standard security procedure that no other person was allowed access to the complex after 6pm on any day, Ehie claimed that it was even more revealing that the incident took place on Sunday and with the security operatives confirming that the Speaker’s convoy was in the building when it took place.
Citing the revelation of Florence Nwaeke, wife of the ex-HoS, that her husband spoke under duress regretted that the lure of money had made him take the bait thrown at him by enemies of the governor.
“He has betrayed his conscience and betrayed his family, because he wants to own the world. George is not a contented man. He is not speaking from his right frame of mind.”
Further debunking Nwaeke’s claim of being an insider, Ehie, said he wielded no influence that allowed him direct contact with the governor, stating that the former HoS, never visited, nor had any such contact without due clearance from relevant authorities.
Hear him: “George Nwaeke has never, he is not even in the protocol list of those who can have uninterrupted access to the governor. The records are in the Government House. The security clearance of the Government House which I superintend or supervise is with the DSS.
“I challenge George Nwaeke to mention from the 29th of October 2023, like he claimed, to the other day when he visited Government House, either at odd hours without prior clearance from the DSS, to say that he discussed with the governor. Let him show the record. There is none.”
