Dauda Lawal, Governor of Zamfara State, on Wednesday, upped the ante in the current face-off with Bello Matawalle, his predecessor in office by waxing moral, wondering whether the Minister of State for Defence is ever thinking of the legacies he was leaving behind for his numerous children.
Riding on the sail of some damning allegations of massive corruption and high crime, such as involvement in banditry, the governor, maintained that there was nothing left for the Minister than to spare a thought for his immediate family by resigning his office and clearing his name with the authorities.
A guest of TVC political programme, Lawal, named the alleged misappropriation of over N250million, by the governor and his connection with bandits, some of whom he was said to have harboured in the government house during his tenure, wondering what would be going on in his mind that would make him not to want to redeem his name.
His words: “This is a father of 41 children. For goodness sake, what kind of legacy is he going to leave for his children when he’s being accused of misappropriating this amount of money? So, he should have come out clean, face EFCC, clear his name and then, come back and continue to do what he wanted to do.”
It was also in the same outing that the governor also showered praises on the military for their successful operations in the state, which had led to the vanquishing of some of the kingpins responsible for terrorising the people through banditry, particularly the killing of Halilu Sububu, identified as one of the most dreaded.
“About three days ago, one of the major kingpins, Halilu Sububu, was killed by the military and the CPG (Community Protection Guard). That has been a major success for us. We’re extremely happy, because Sububu was one of the leading kingpins in Zamfara State that has large followers and a very wide network in terms of sourcing weapons.
“I can say it is a happy moment for us, not just in Zamfara but the entire Northern Nigeria, as well as Nigeria as a whole. So, it was a good one and more are coming. Like I said, Halilu was a major player in that region and he had large followers. Even the likes of Turji that has making noise all over is actually under Halilu Sububu.
“Now Halilu is gone, Turji will be the next to follow and I believe it is just a matter of time, Turji will be killed very, very soon. I’m confident that the way things are going, and with the commitment of the Nigerian security, I think it is a matter of time, Turji will be history, as well.”
