Lagos has been put ahead of some of the world’s most popular cities, including Dubai, the United Arabs Emirate (UAE), Amsterdam, Melbourne, Australia, Montreal, Canada, Osaka, Japan, Glasgow in the United Kingdom and even Singapore and Sidney in Australia, as the best city to visit best city to visit in the world.
This was the outcome of a survey made by Time Out, a British media and hospitality company that publishes guides and magazines, which put the Nigerian commercial capital at number 19, out of the 50 cities in the world, which also included Vancouver in Canada, Barcelona, Spain, Osaka, Japan and Istanbul in Turkey as some of the places under the city.
Some of the cities, the publication also listed included Cape Town, South Africa, which came second and Accra, with Accra, the capital of Ghana, coming 44 on the list, which Time Out based on a survey of over 20,000 city dwellers worldwide and insights from its editorial network.
The criteria encompassed aspects like food quality and affordability, culture, nightlife, overall ambiance, community spirit, green spaces, historic sites, and more. The report advocates for global citizens to explore the vibrant offerings of Lagos.
“Whether you’re a staunch mainlander or from Lekki, there’s something for everyone in Lagos, Africa’s most populous city. Both the city and its suburbs are expanding – just check out live-work-play concept Eko Atlantic City. Just out of town, Epe, on the north side of Lekki Lagoon, is experiencing a boom.
“When it comes to standard of living, Lagos has a lot going for it – 96 percent of locals are happy, 98 percent would call Lagos beautiful and the city got a 92 percent friendliness rating, too,” the publication was quoted as saying in the report, which also highlighted Victoria Island’s trifecta of swanky resorts, food haunts, and nightlife, Ikeja’s Kuti’s Bistro, owned by the legendary afrobeat family, for serving up “reliably delicious food”, and Oniru Beach as a relaxation spot.
This is coming against the report of the Economist Intelligence Unit, which in 2023, listed Lagos, which successive governors over the years, have been labouring to transform into a mega city, as the fourth worst city to live in the world, above other like Algiers, the capital of Algeria; Tripoli, Libya’s capital; and Damascus, the capital of war-torn Syria.
The report surveyed 173 cities and used 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
