Former Vice President Atiku Abubaka met with former Senate President, David Mark on Monday as the jostle for the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) heightens,   The Nation is reporting, quoting sources.

The meeting is coming at a time Mark’s predecessor at the Senate and former Director-General of Atiku’s campaign, Iyorchia Ayu, said to have thrown his hat into the ring, is still pushing ahead with his aspiration for the party’s top job, the report, said, a situation believed to have put Benue State’s Governor, Samuel Ortom in dilemma, as both top candidates hail from his state.

It was learnt that due to the ongoing horse-trading, none of those interested in leading the PDP has obtained the nomination form, though some party leaders were also said to be pushing for a consensus candidate from the North.

The paper, citing its investigation  indicated that Atiku, seeking for a seamless and crisis-free process for the party’s top job, had a meeting with Mark between 9pm and 10pm on Monday.

It could not be ascertained whether Atiku’s visit was an endorsement of Mark, the report said, while quoting its source in the former VP’s camp as saying: “The  two leaders met for the sake of unity and progress of the party. The ex-Vice President does not want to take sides. I think he is looking at the larger picture of 2023.

“We are all concerned about the politics of the national chairman, we do not want the party destabilized under any guise. Maybe the ex-VP is trying to see how the party can manage the micro-zoning in the North to keep the zone intact for the next elections.”

A member of the NWC was also quoted as having added: “We have heard of the talks between Atiku and Mark. I see Atiku’s visit to Mark as a tactical endorsement of the former President of the Senate. I think we are beginning to have a direction of where the chairmanship ticket will go.”

As at yesterday, none of the aspirants had obtained nomination form because of what a source described as ongoing horse-trading.

The number of the aspirants is however swelling up with believed aspiration of a former Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo.

Others race are a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana; ex-governors Ahmed Makarfi, Ibrahim Shema and Babangida Aliyu.
