The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami said the Federal Government will appeal the judgment of an Oyo State High Court which awarded N20 billion in damages against the Department of State Service for invading Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho’s Ibadan residence.

Malami told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday that efforts were already being made to commence the process of appealing the judgment, saying the judgement would not stand.

“The Federal Government will study the judgment and appeal. All necessary measures will be taken,” Dr. Umar Gwandu Special Assistant on Media, to the AGF said Friday.

Justice Ladiran Akintola of Oyo State High Court had ordered the Department of State Security (DSS) to pay N20 billion to Iboho for unlawfully invading his Soka, Ibadan house on July 1.

Akintola, had awarded the sum as “exemplary and aggravated damages” against the secret police after the Yoruba separatist agitator, currently in detention in Benin Republic on the same issue went to court to demand N500billion in damages for the alleged invasion.

Before making the order, the judge had tongue-lashed the DSS for acting based on what he described as “arbitrary aggression and prejudices” from his agitation for Yoruba nation."

Igboho’s residence at Soka, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, had been stormed at about 1:30 am on July 1, 2021, by DSS,  where two persons were reportedly killed and 12 others arrested, prompting the separatist agitator to approach the court through his lawyer, Yomi Alliyu to ask for remedies.
