Any blame for Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the infraction of Hudu Ari, Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State, on Sunday in unilaterally declaring Aisha Binani winner of the governorship election in the state, will be misplaced, Shehu Sani, Senator formerly representing Kaduna Central, has cautioned.
Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner by Ari after announcing the results of 10 of the 69 polling units, a development, which INEC, quickly disowned, declaring it as null and void and went ahead to suspend the REC the next day..
Using his Facebook page to weigh in on the matter, Sani, a human rights activist, argued that the electoral body Yakubu should be absolved of complicity in the matter as he was not blameworthy, adding: It’s unfair to blame Professor Mahmud Yakubu for the unfortunate event that happened in Adamawa State. The REC shamelessly violated the law and prompt action was taken by the National Headquarters of INEC.
“Prof Mahmud has done a commendable job by rescuing the situation and by extension rescuing our electoral system from brigandage. The next step is to demand the prosecution of the REC and other culprits involved. Let’s be fair and objective.”
