That the votes the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored in Nasarawa Local Government in Kano Metropolitan Area alone in the last presidential election was higher than its outing in the entire South East, is indicative of why the party is not worried about the effect of the Labour Party (LP), candidate entering into the presidential race for 2023
This was the argument, Abdullahi Ganduje, Governor of Kano State, adduced on Monday night to emphasise that the ruling party is the least worried about Obi’s impact on the fortunes of the party in the election, saying that should be left to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the traditional beneficiary of such votes.
In fact, the governor, a guest of Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, stated that the emergence of Obi spelt doom for the main opposition party, saying it would rather widen the gap with which the ruling party, would win the election.
Ganduje, who saw Obi’s presidential ambition as a good omen for the APC, said: “Our major contender is the PDP. What is our political investment in the South-East? The votes we got from Nasarawa Local Government in Kano Metropolitan Area was much higher than the total votes APC got in the entire five states of the South East.
“So, you can see that if there is any problem politically in the South East, it is the PDP that will suffer the brush. So, the emergence of Obi from the South Eastern part of this country I think it’s the votes of PDP that he will snatch away and is already snatching away. For APC, I think it is even a good omen. Instead of having a very close competitor, now the attention of the competitor has been diverted.”
Stressing how the main opposition party would lose against the APC, he said the internal crisis they have been having, was a major cause for worry, adding: “Apart from the problem they have within the political party, especially the G5, there is also the factor of Obi. So, any political analyst would know that the emergence of Labour Party is a minus to PDP and by extrapolation, it is a plus to our great party, the APC,”
The governors include Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).
